Lane one · Supplement your practice

Most people were never going to buy the expensive thing.

If you are an artist and frequently table at the holiday flea markets or craft shows, what you make takes hours and costs what it costs. Most of the people walking past were only ever going to look. Something smaller, with the same art on it, sits beside it at a price they can say yes to.

  1. 1

Nothing about what you make changes

Illustrate books by hand? Having only one price on the table is holding you back.

  2. 2

It is not a new craft

It is your own artwork as a high quality print that you can apply to whatever you want in seconds.

Don't know where to start? Try These.

Lane two · The Ninja Transfers Magic Trick

Everybody loves high-end embroidery. Almost nobody wants to pay for it.

Ninja Transfers can carry the look of chenille, of stitched embroidery, of a raised puff logo, of a watercolor on paper. And here is why that is a business and not just a trick: real embroidery is cost prohibitive because of the advanced technical skills required and expensive machinery required. Ninja Transfers can achieve the premium look convincingly for a fraction of the cost. Its a truly novel approach to a real problem in the customization world.

  1. 1

Start with art you already have

A logo, a drawing, a painting, a photo of something you painted. Nothing yet? Describe it to the free AI Image Generator and pick one of the three it draws.

  2. 2

Upload it and click "Edit with prompt"

Take it to DTF Transfers By Size on ninjatransfers.com and upload it the way you would if you were ordering it. A small button under the picture says Edit with prompt, and a box opens for you to type in. It is part of the upload, not a separate thing to buy, and using it is free.

  3. 3

Ask for the look, then "Use this image"

Ask it to recreate your image as an embroidered logo and what comes back is your own design, carrying stitches. Or ask for chenille, for puff, for a woven label, for watercolor on paper. Click "Use this image" and it carries straight through to your order.

Type this, word for word

recreate this image as an embroidered logo

That is the whole prompt. What comes back is the same design you gave it, carrying stitches. None of it is less yours.

Change the last two words for any look you want to emulate: as a chenille patch, as a raised puff logo, as a woven label, as a watercolor on paper.

If you like what comes back, click Use this image and it goes into your order. If you do not, type it again. There is no charge for trying.

Then say what it is. Never let anyone believe they are buying stitching. Tell them it has the look of embroidery. Nobody is ever disappointed by that, and you do not need them fooled for this to be worth buying.

"It has the look of embroidery." Say it in those words and nobody is ever disappointed. You are not passing it off as stitching and you do not need to. It is its own product, sold as itself, at a price they can actually say yes to.

Lane three · Somebody else's logo

Does that new coffee shop in town have a shirt provider...?

And if you really want to expand your opportunities, point the same eye at somebody else's name. A local business needs custom products, and what they are really buying is consistency: the twentieth product has to look like the first one. You are still the one making it, and your twist is why theirs ends up looking better than something out of a catalog. This is the biggest step of the three, and it is the one that turns a table into a customer list.

Where to look

  1. 1

A sign that was not there last month

  2. 2

    Youth sports

  3. 3

    Churches and community groups

  4. 4

Gyms, dance studios and martial arts

  5. 5

  6. 6

Anywhere that just repainted or reopened

Three ways in. Pick the one you can actually do this week.

Where most people start

The message, word for word

Fill in the brackets yourself. Everything else stays exactly as it is.

Look them up first. It takes about ninety seconds.

The email is on their contact page, their Facebook About tab, or the bio on their Instagram. While you are there, take the two things that make this message land: what they actually do, and something that just happened. A new location, a new sign, a season starting, a post about a busy weekend. If there is no email anywhere, that is your answer. Walk in instead.

Copy this

Subject: Custom shirts, local

Hi [their name],

I saw [the thing you found. You just opened on Mill Street. The new sign went up. Your season starts next month]. Congratulations.

I am local, I live [over on the next street], and I make custom shirts and apparel. If you ever want anything with your logo on it, for the team or to sell, I would love to quote it. There is no minimum, so even a handful is fine.

Here are a couple of things I have made: [two photos]

Either way, welcome to the neighborhood.

[your name]

Why it is written like this

This is how professional cold outreach teams write, and it is worth knowing why. It is plain text, one person typing to another. No logo, no letterhead, no links, no button. Those are the things that make a message look like it went to a thousand people, and inboxes treat it that way too.

The brackets get filled in by hand, on purpose. Software can fill them in automatically and everybody can tell. The one specific detail you looked up is the entire reason it gets read.

And it asks for nothing. There is no call to book and no decision to make, so there is nothing to say no to.

The fastest one

Walk in, say nine seconds of words, and leave

Every guide skips this part. Here is the wrong version first, because it is the one everybody does.

The wrong version

"Hi, um, sorry to bother you. I don't know if you'd even be interested in this. I just kind of started doing this thing, I don't know if it's any good. But if you ever wanted shirts, I could maybe do some? No pressure at all."

Everything wrong with that is that it asks her to make a decision and tells her not to, at the same time. It hands her a job and then apologizes for it.

Say this instead

"Hi, I'm [your name]. I'm local, I live right over on [the next street]. I make custom shirts and I made you this one. If you ever want more, or you want to sell them, I can do that. Either way, that one is yours."

And then you leave.

Why the short one works

It asks her for nothing, so there is nothing for her to say no to. The shirt on her counter does the convincing after you have gone, which is the whole reason to bring one.

The sample is not a courage prop, it is a business tool. It gives her something to react to, so the conversation is about a shirt on a table instead of about you standing there.

The real unlock

Turn up holding the finished thing

This is the one almost nobody does, and the reason you can is the reason to be here rather than anywhere else.

What you bring

Pick the lead you are genuinely excited about and make the product before you ever speak to them. Their logo, on the thing they would actually sell, in two or three variations. A different size, a different placement, a different color.

You are not showing them a mockup on a phone. You are handing them a finished product and letting them pick which one they like. Nobody walks in having already made the decision for them, and that is exactly why it lands.

And if their logo is not good enough to print

Plenty of local businesses have no real logo, or have one that will not print well. That is not a dead end, it is the opening.

Redraw it, or design them something better, and bring that instead. The free tools on ninjatransfers.com do it in minutes. The AI Image Generator makes artwork from a sentence you type. The Upscaler rescues the low resolution file they emailed you. The Ninja Mockup Creator shows you the design on the product before you spend anything. You turn up having already solved a problem they never asked you to solve.

Why you can afford this and almost nobody else can

Ten years ago this was impossible. Three variations of somebody's logo meant three setups, and the money was gone before the conversation started, so nobody ever speculated.

A transfer is a sheet. It costs the same whether the art is one letter or a painting, there is no minimum, and it arrives in days. That flexibility is what lets you lead with the work instead of a pitch, and it is the real separator.

If they say no, you are out the cost of a couple of shirts and an afternoon.

Know what you keep before you say a price out loud.

Put your own numbers in. It adds up what one piece costs you, pays you for your own time, and tells you what to charge and what you keep.

A note from Aidan

I used to dread the order for twelve. All of the setup, none of the volume. Now twelve pays per piece like a hundred does, and the twelve is how you get the hundred.

The questions everyone asks first

What is a DTF transfer? DTF stands for Direct-to-Film, a printing method where your design is printed onto a special film and then heat pressed onto a garment. DTF transfers work on a wide range of fabrics—including cotton, polyester, blends, and more—and can be applied in about 12-15 seconds with a heat press.
What is the minimum I can order? No Minimums! Whether you need 1 or 100,000 we can do it!
What kind of press do I need? You can use the iron you have lying around your house or an industrial level heat press or anything in between. Learn more on our How to Press page.
What sizes are available? We have sizes from 2" X 2" to 24" X 30 feet
How do transfers hold up in the wash? Ninja Transfers have been rigorously tested and verified by third party to ensure long-lasting durability. After undergoing 100 machine wash cycles (80°F, normal cycle, line dry) on a 100% cotton shirt, the transfers were evaluated for color retention, peeling, cracking, and overall integrity. The results were overwhelmingly positive, with a "Satisfactory" grade across all criteria, including negligible hand-feel change and no significant signs of delamination or print detachment.
How quickly can I get my order? Expedited orders ship within 24 -48 hours.
What file format should my artwork be? Vector art is always preferred, raster art should be at least 300 dpi. Preferred file types: .AI, .PDF Accepted files types: .JPG, .PNG
What is your refund policy? We stand behind our work so If you have any issues with your transfers at all Contact Us and we'll be sure to make sure we solve whatever issue you might have.

What about the person who wants one and lives three states away? You cannot press it, box it and drive it to them, so today that is a no. Ninja Print on Demand prints it and ships it out under your name instead. Free app, no minimums, the same DTF print as everything above. The jobs in your own town are still the ones that pay best, and that is the rest of this page. Start selling with Ninja POD · What is print on demand?
